The Central Bank of Kenya has released newly designed currency notes, which include denominations of Sh50, Sh100, Sh200, Sh500, and Sh1,000, as part of an effort to update the country’s bank notes.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 20, the regulator said the rollout of the new features, which started in August with the Sh1,000 note, has now been extended to all other denominations.
“We wish to update the public that the release of Sh50, Sh100, Sh200, and Sh500 denominations is now in progress,” CBK said.
The future banknotes boast enhanced security threads with colour-changing effects specific to each denomination, improving their security and design. They will also feature the signature of the current CBK Governor, Kamau Thugge, alongside that of the Treasury Principal Secretary, Dr. Chris Kiptoo, who now serves as a Member of the CBK Board.
The year of print will be updated to 2024, and the new notes will incorporate advanced security features, including colour-changing security threads. The redesigned notes will also feature updates such as the signatures of CBK Governor Kamau Thugge and the Principal Secretary of the National Treasury Chris Kiptoo.
“We would like to remind the public that all other banknotes currently in circulation remain legal tender and will continue to circulate alongside the released banknotes,” the CBK said, assuring the public that older banknotes will remain in circulation alongside the new ones.
