The selection panel responsible for recruiting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners has taken on its mandate.
This is after the High Court on Friday, January 24, paved way for President Ruto to appoint the panel following the dismissal of a petition challenging the constitution.
The seven members include Prof Adams Oloo, Lindah Kiome Gakii, James Evans Misati, Nichodemus Bore, Koki Muli, Andrew Kipkoech Tanui, and Dr Nelson Makanda.
Fatuma Saman and Ms. Caroline Kituku, however, were not present at the ceremony that took place in the Supreme Court building.
During the swearing-in ceremony on Monday, January 27, Chief Justice (CJ) Martha Koome urged the new panel to undertake their critical mandate with much precision, insisting they need to appoint commissioners of high integrity.
โRise to this occasion with honour, patriotism, and a deep sense of duty. Let this process be a beacon of integrity, setting a standard for all institutions to follow,โ the CJ said.
She added that the decisions made by the selection panel would not only shape the 2027 elections, but the future of Kenyaโs democracy.
The panel has 90 days to conclude the process of recruiting the IEBC chairperson and commissioners who will oversee the 2027 general elections as well as review the electoral boundaries.
Justice Koome said the credibility of elections defines the stability of a nation, and that history has shown that when elections are free, fair, and transparent, our country flourishes.
โHowever, when they are mismanaged, the consequences are severe, threatening national unity and public trust,โ she said.
