South Korea’s acting president impeached

South Korea’s parliament has impeached acting President Han Duck-soo, Speaker of the National Assembly Woo Won-shik said.

The impeachment, which was approved by 192 delegates and needed at least 151 votes, came slightly two weeks after parliament stripped President Yoon Suk Yeol of his powers following a martial law order that plunged the country into political disarray.

Legislators from the ruling party boycotted the vote.

Han, who assumed the role after parliament voted to impeach Yoon, said in a statement that he respects the impeachment decision and “will suspend my duties under relevant laws to avoid further confusion and uncertainty.”

He vowed that he would step down “in accordance with the law so as not to add chaos” to the country’s politics.

Now his case will be reviewed by the Constitutional Court which may take up to 180 days.

The authority of President Yoon Suk Yeol was suspended on December 14. Finance minister Choi Sang-mok is set to replace Han as acting president. Click here to support our work
