Kenya Power restores power after nationwide blackout

Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has confirmed power supply has been fully restored to all affected areas following a nationwide outage that occurred shortly after midnight.

The power blackout caused disruption in most parts of the country, except in the Western and North Rift regions.

In a statement released Wednesday, December 18, KPLC said its technical teams worked throughout to rectify the outage thereby restoring power to all affected areas.

“We are pleased to report that power has been restored to most parts of North Rift, Central Rift, Western Kenya, South Nyanza, and sections of Nairobi and Mount Kenya regions following a widespread outage,” Kenya Power said.

The power utility company added, “We appreciate our customers’ understanding during the restoration exercise.”

The blackout, which started late Tuesday night, also reduced internet connectivity in the affected areas. In an era where connectivity is one of the basics not only for online businesses, but also for large corporations and retail outlets, frequent power outages that are not restored immediately is bad for businesses.

One solution to the rising blackouts, is to focus on addressing infrastructure and reliability. Kenya power should take measures to restore power faster in the near future. “We remain committed to ensuring a stable and reliable power supply to all our customers,” the company said.
